Key of the Carina Nebula
Many of the H II regions or structures within the Eta Carina Nebula
pictured above, are characterized by bright rims of ionized gas surrounding dark cores of dust.
The bright rims are created by the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by nearby hot,
luminous stars, which ionizes the surrounding gas and causes it to emit light.
